Princess Tatenda
Princess Tatenda and the Forest of Treasures shines a light on how pollution and climate change are affecting our planet. The story is told through the lens of a spunky African female protagonist younger generations can identify with. Paralleling the contemporary climate change conversation, the story contrasts the need for older generations and younger generations to understand the impact we have on the environment and to respond to that. Princess Tatenda is on a journey, relatable to the audience, that begins in tragedy and selfishness but leads to self-realization and environmental advocacy. Princess Tatenda's story inspires us to look inward and take action in a grassroots effort to improve our lives by cleaning up our environment and supporting and loving each other, bettering the world we live in.
The concept of the story was inspired by writer and producer, T. Douglas Tarenyika's nine nieces and nephews. In speaking to them about the impact of climate change he sadly learned that they are not actively being taught daily about pollution, environmental change, deforestation, animal extinction etc. It is only a conversation for them one day a year, Earth Day in April. Because of this he felt compelled to create a story and characters that are relatable for not just younger generations but for everyone. Princess Tatenda and her animal counterparts teach the viewer that making change is as simple as adjusting your mindset and picking up trash when you see it. Together let's Make Earth Great Again - one person at a time.
Characters
Princess Tatenda
Voiced by Talia Williams, a 16-year old African girl. Naive, hardheaded, intelligent, sarcastic, snappy, short-tempered, compassionate, daring. She speaks before she thinks but has great empathy for others. Open to learning something new but can be stubborn.
Asa
Voiced by Vavaria Etheredge, Asa is a sable antelope with spunk and attitude. Thick, curvy, and muscular she carries herself with confidence. Her true character is wise, caring, and courageous.
Konsu
Voiced by Shawn Mongold, A young tarsier with a big heart but mindset of an elderly man. Looks cute and cuddly but is more grumpy; seems constantly annoyed by everyone and anything. Tends to have an “I-told-you-so” attitude.
Sitota
Voiced by Kendall Wynn, a young, quirky, emotional teen tree seeking his purpose in the world. Even the slightest reminder of a sour memory can change his entire mood. But his discouragement can be just as easily turned to hopefulness when he sees the goodness in someone.
